Ira Glass on the Creative Process

14 10 2009

Came across this clip while surfing Scott Hansen’s blog. It’s worthy of a repost on my part. Although he is talking about video reproduction, anyone in the creative field should watch it. The first 2 mins really left an impact on me.

The event that didn’t happen

6 08 2009

TashedxKin-Flyer

Here’s a flyer i did for K.I.N. The Party didn’t happen due to some unforeseen circumstances. Such a waste after all that planning. Anyway, didn’t want the flyer go to waste. Might reuse it for something else in future.

Oh, and the K.I.N Zine issue 1 is up. Click here to download a web version. Or drop me a mail for a hardcopy version.

Unconscious Design

On first glance, this looked to me like an old book cover or a vinyl sleeve. Its actually a satellite picture of circular fields and roads in Egypt.

The world looks so peaceful from above.

Type

13 06 2009

Been so busy with the store these days and the only sort of design i can afford to do is the store collaterals. Posters and flyers and stuff. Began experimenting with type, pretty fun trying to make something look designed, yet simple and straight forward.

Here is 2 that i have done, first for the 2nd year anniversary sale

and the other is a job flyer looking for an intern.

Trying to keep it organic, more in line with the direction of the store, no pretty splashes of colour. Just subtle discreet touches

A Nice Set Singapore

31 05 2009

Thanks to everyone for the support and those who came down for the exhibition. Great meeting and chatting with the other artists who took part as well. Amazing seeing what the others did, the effort involved in their customs were just amazing. Can’t wait to see what will happen next for the mats. Will post up a couple more pictures when I get the time.

Updates!

21 05 2009

… and so, my slipmat entry was selected to be in the exhibition! Didn’t have time to take photos of the artwork printed on the actual mat, but will do so at the exhibition. Do drop by Hacidena on the 29th of May, next Friday, to check out my mat and those from all the talented artists who took time off to take part. Should be a rocking party!

Been busy at Know It Nothing, the store I’m working for. Handling their operations and all the graphic work needed. Been working on a mini zine/catalogue for the store. Nice opportunity to help out with the whole process, from conceptual to shoot to layouts. Thanks to Dju-lian, Oats & Sparkle, for all the help and really great photos. The Zine, Issue 1, will be printed out and distrubuted in the store soon. In the meantime, here is a teaser.

Zine Cover

Will post up photos of the event and the zine real soon.

BBC’s Imagine – Marc Newson

5 05 2009

My first taste of design back in school was in product design, i simply adored it. Its was the whole process of creating something functional and interactive that drew me to it. The idea of creating something so desirable that consumers just must have it. All the thought processes and little details that people don’t notice until they start interacting with the product. And when you finally get to hold your creation, which started out as a small sketch in your notebook, the sense of achievement is awesome. Much more than anything I’ve done till date. I guess product design is all about changing the world.

The only gripe i had with it was the time and money needed to be invested in it. As a young product designer starting out, its really difficult to create all these wild creations you have in your head without capital. Without the money available to invest in prototype making, most product designer friends i have resorted to working in consumer electronic or furniture companies for comfortable pay under the direction of someone else. Radical product ideas of theirs just float around, waiting for someone to notice them and be willing to invest in it. Its difficult to attain that rock star/artist status where people commission you to create something according to your own interpretation and style.

Maybe its just me, but i feel its really hard for a product designer to make it here in Singapore. Where not many people can justify investing a little more into a well designed product and rather opt to go with something they are more familiar with. Guess that was why i haven’t really touched product design in a while. I do approach any work i do in the same way i do for a product, but haven’t made anything with my hands in a while.

I came across this feature on Marc Newson a few days back and i must say, I’m inspired again. Its really worth the watch. I like the way he approaches his work, adding a lot of his signature style into what ever he is doing. Challenging the norm. The feature explains it better than what I can. Marc Newson is changing the world.

This is part 1/5 of the feature, the rest can be found under the user’s videos.
